Nerd Camp

Nerd Camp When I was a child I was a nerd. (I know this comes as a big shock to many of you. But its true) Being a nerd, I did nerd things. I read a lot of Star Wars books. I wore a fanny pack in the front with extra glasses cleaner and wax for my braces. While other kids did their fifth grade science reports on, say, baking powder volcanos, I did mine on The Physics of Baseball. Also, I went to nerd camp. In 1998, when I was about to enter the 6th grade, my mom got a flier for something called the Talent Development Institute, or TDI. TDI was supposed to be a camp for talented and gifted children. Other than being REAL GOOD at reading, I didnt know what my talents or gifts might be, but I went anyway because hey, camp. Talent Development turned out to mean do a lot of really cool creative things with other geeky children. That first year, I dissected birds, took my first creative writing class, and learned how to make a turtle to move around a computer screen using the MicroWorlds programming environment, the basis of which was developed here at MIT. I spent two more years at the camp, taking more programming classes (including my first HTML class), river biology experiments, improv, and lots of other stuff. Then, when I entered my final year as a camper, the director approached me and said: hey, why dont you come back next year and teach a class? Wait, I thought. You mean I get to come back to camp, and youll pay me to do so? Yep. My first summer teaching at TDI was summer of 2001. I taught movie-making to 7th-9th graders using iMovie. Later, I added music production with Garageband. I also ran the Active Games evening activity lots of capture the flag and shakes and minnows and helped out the overnight supervisors in the dorms. So I started teaching at TDI 10 years ago. And, with the exception of last year (when an important family obligation intervened), Ive been there ever since. Last night I returned from TDI 2011. Hence my radio silence on the blogs (and Facebook) for the last week or so. TDI was, as it has always been, an incredibly rewarding experience. This year was different, however. It was rewarding in a new, scary, good sort of way. See, when I started attending TDI, nearly all of the staff were experienced, local middle school teachers who helped out for this one week. But because TDI has been going on for so long, and because the community is so strong, more and more alumni began teaching as I did. And now, nearly the entire staff are not only TDI alumni, but more importantly former students of mine. This turns out to be a pretty trippy experience. There are serene, professional instructional staff at the camp now who I first taught as drippy-nosed, hyperactive ten year olds. And all but the very oldest campers were not yet born when I first attended TDI. This is all a bit scary. But its also very rewarding. This year, I turned over control of movie making and music production which had become two of the most popular classes at TDI to four of my former students to run. I taught class in Digital Literacy and took on more overnight duties. So my former kids had the opportunity to grow and challenge themselves, and I had the opportunity to think about new, interesting things Id like to teach and do. Its also been incredibly rewarding to see these kids grow up into real people. Many of my former students who are now staff are about to enter college. One of them was first introduced to music production in my class as a 6th grader, and he plans to attend conservatory for classical guitar next year. I cant even begin to tell you how proud that makes me feel. Beyond all of this old-age reflection Ive been undergoing, theres also just the good, clean fun of being at camp. Here are some vignettes from the week that was: Kriff Julia Kriff Julia are undoubtably two of the most adorable campers to ever step foot on TDIs campus. Kriff is 11 and Julia is 10. Heres Kriff, on my shoulders: Before this picture was taken, Kriff who stands at about my waist was right in front of me, looking up and talking earnestly. As I listened and nodded, I spread my arms apart above his head, as if I were going to crush his skull between my hands. At that moment, Kriff flung his arms around me in a hug. And I said, aww, KriffI cant crush your skull like a paper bag now!! And he looked up at me, grinned, and piped up why? Because I melted your resolve with my warm embrace? So I threw him up on my shoulders and told my buddy Max to take a picture, to which Kriff yelled hey, Imma do the Fonz. Ayyyyyyyyy What didnt go so well for Kriff, however, was the dark chocolate tasting exploratory session: Heres Julia, with my longtime friend (we were fellow campers at the inaugural TDI in 1998) Emily and I: Julia was absolutely hilarious. She always had a pair of pink superballs with her and would throw and chase them. She made her website (in my digital literacy class) all about a pair of talking velociraptors, complete with dialogue. For my friend Emilys class Artist Block Party basically a make whatever you want during arts crafts deal Julia made a bunch of little puffball people. Not content with having made these people, she then made Extreme Puffball Adventure Park, a sort of Six Flags for them all to play on: Nerd Camp Reveille Many of you may know Reveille, the iconic wake-up bugle call that serves as an alarm clock for campers everywhere. I used to make one of the campers who played the trumpet play it every morning, but he didnt bring his trumpet this year. So instead, every morning at 7:00 AM, I went with something a little bit different: TDI: The Movie One thing that probably needs explaining is that I am the King of nerd camp. Years and years ago I nicknamed the unruliest among them gremlins, and ever since, I have been nigh-worshipped as The Gremlin Lord. Its applied Machiavelli: I am both loved and feared, as you can see (for a split second, around :43) in this trailer from the movie making class, TDI: The Movie Trailer: Keenan, Grady, and Jamison are all former students of mine who are now staff, and Jamison taught the Improv class this year, which inspired the concluding pun. As I was going through pictures for this post I found this photo from 2007, when I orchestrated a human pyramid from a bunch of the campers. Grady the kid in the white shirt in the center of the pyramid, now a teacher and attending UVM in the fall had commented on it saying something to the effect of TDI will be my family forever. I feel the same way. Ive been involved with TDI more than half of my life. And I never feel as good, as relaxed, and as at peace with myself and the world as when I am back there. So here are my takeaways from TDI, for all of you out there: Always remember the example you set for others, especially those younger than you, because one day they will fill your shoes. What matters most in life is family, broadly defined: those whom you have grown with, whom you support and who support you in return, because they are the people who will always fill a particular place in your heart that nothing else quite can. And finally: never, ever be ashamed to be excited by the things you love, even if they are things from your childhood like nerd camp. Because they are totally worth your excitement and enjoyment now as much as they ever were.

I am not very convinced that this is the meaning that Faulkner had in mind when describing Miss Emily. Another word the narrator uses to describe Miss Emily is â€Å"inescapable†. This word means just what it sounds like. Literally, Miss Emily doesn’t even ever leave, or â€Å"escape†, her house and is rarely seen out in public. This goes along with her being described as a recluse. The Board of Aldermen sees her as an inescapable problem because she refuses to pay the taxes. The town feels as if they are inescapable from her because she unconsciously does things that draw attention to her. She refuses to pay her taxes; she leaves dead bodies in the house, which makes a putrid smell emerge, and creates a distress among the town people. The town people in turn, must find ways to cover up the smell and sneakily go and cover it up in the late hours of the night. â€Å"Impervious†, is another word used to explain Miss Emily’s behavior. The definition â€Å"incapable of being influenced, persuaded or affected†, applies specifically to this story. Miss Emily is extremely stubborn. She refuses to pay her taxes even after the Board of Aldermen’s best efforts to persuade her to pay them. They send notices, hand written letters and even a deputation to her house. She simply refuses. She is unaffected by the people of the town and lives individually for the majority of her life. Another definition is â€Å"not permitting penetration or passage†. This applies specifically to her house. Her house offers no visitors for years upon years. No one is seen entering or exiting the house besides Emily occasionally and Negro male servant. Miss Emily is also described as being â€Å"tranquil†, meaning calm; free from commotion or tumult. To the people on the outside Miss Emily is seen as tranquil because nothing exciting ever appears to be going on in her household, people never come and go and she seems to be somewhat content with her life. She doesn’t ever seem to create a seen or commotion aside from her refusal to pay the taxes. Another definition is: â€Å"free from or unaffected by disturbing emotions†. Miss Emily doesn’t seem to be affected by the emotions of love, which leads many people to pity her. She does seem to love a man name Homer when he comes along, but this does cause Miss Emily to be affected by emotions, little do the town people know. The last word used to describe Miss Emily would be perverse. The most fitting definition I found for perverse that pertains to Miss Emily would be â€Å"wicked, or corrupt†. Miss Emily is definitely wicked and corrupt. She would also be categorized as grotesque. Many things Miss Emily do supports this theory. Miss Emily seemed to have found love in Homer Barron but because he would not marry her she went to the extreme and murdered him. She bought arsenic and poisoned him one day. As if murdering him wasn’t enough, she left his body in her bed, surrounded in a bridal decorated room. To add to her perverseness, when people finally entered the house on the day of her funeral, they noticed that on the pillow next to his dead body in the bed, there was an â€Å"indentation of a head†, and they saw â€Å"a long strand of iron-gray hair. † Miss Emily’s hair was iron gray. This makes clear that Miss Emily continued to sleep with the dead body of Homer Barron. Needless to say, Miss Emily was an extremely perverse human being. Ormrod, J., 2009). Using a quantitative research method has several advantages for testing the hypothesis. The aim of quantitative research is to classify features, count the features, and construct statistical models to explain what was observed (McNabb, D.E., 2008).Typically, quantitative methodologies uses already tested and validated theories about how and why an event occurs. The most important reason to use a quantitative method is that it has more credibility. It has more credibility to be implemented in natural settings or non-clinical settings by organizational leaders, administrators, public servants, and individuals or institutes who fund programs. It provides precise and numerical data. In addition, this method studies large numbers of individuals, which highlights how data analysis is not as time consuming compared to other research methods. Lastly, the results of the research are relatively independent of the researcher. Yet using a quantitative method could create an opportunity to miss phenomena naturally occurring because the focus of the research, especially the theory or hypothesis testing rather than on theory or hypothesis generation. Qualitative research design focuses on the ent. .onal behavior management, and behavioral pharmacology and toxicology (DeGrandpre, R., 2000). Criticism of Behavioral Theories. During this time, social policy was relatively non-existent and financial assistance was the sole responsibility of private or public charities. Women did not have rights or economic independence, as they were typically considered the property of their husbands. During this time, a woman with three children who was abandoned by her husband would receive little or no financial assistance; she may fall under the category of the â€Å"unworthy† poor, as she was not a widow, elderly or physically disabled. The assistance of this women may have changed from the early to late nineteenth century, as feminists such as Elizabeth Cady Stanton began to advocate for social reform, and others such as Jane Adams became concerned with the social well being of women. From the beginning to late 1800’s some social reform took place and the federal government began to implement various programs and institutions to assist in the financial well being of the poor. Early 1800’s During the early 1800’s, there weren’t any significant federal programs aimed at assisting the poor. Financial aid was allocated as the responsibility of the local community, local government, or religious charity. People were expected to work and take care of their families unless they were elderly, sick or widowed; these were labeled the â€Å"worthy† poor in need of assistance. Women were the â€Å"property† if their husbands and typically performed work inside of the home to contribute to the financial well being of the family. They were responsible for the production of cloth, clothing and shoes. Additionally, there weren’t any limitations on the working hours, wages or conditions for women and children. During this time, a mother of three abandoned by her husband would have received little or no assistance. She would not fall under the classification of the â€Å"worthy† poor, as she was not a widow, elderly or sick. It is possible that her or her children would work in mills under dangerous conditions and long hours, if her children were over the age of three; child labor was prevalent during this time period. If a white woman was unable to financially support her children, they may become apprentices to families who can support them. This served as an educational opportunity for children to learn a trade. Collectively, an able bodied poor person, such as an abandoned woman was deemed â€Å"lazy and sinful† and may have been sent to a workhouse through enforced labor. As the nineteenth century progressed, industrialization spurred the continued migration to urban cities in search of training and work; this led to overcrowding and poverty. Poverty was primarily blamed on the individual. If a woman with three children needed assistance, any community organizations of the time would assume that the problem was intra-psychic and there was a moral deficiency. To address this concern, middle class reformers felt that the betterment of cities could be achieved through moral reconstitution of individuals and families. Several â€Å"moral building† organizations were created; the New York Association for Improving the conditions of the Poor was established in 1843. Male volunteers would offer religious teachings, work to get the poor to abstain from alcohol, become more self-disciplined and acquire the Protestant Work Ethic. As a result, a woman abandoned by her husband would receive moral teachings in her home rather than any financial assistance. Mid 1800’s Towards the 1840’s, advocates of social reform began to voice their concerns regarding poverty. Dorothea Dix spoke of the need for separate facilities for adult offenders, juveniles and the mentally ill. She also suggested that the Federal government be responsible for the mentally ill and provide them with treatment through hospitalization. In 1845, the first state asylum for the mentally ill was established in Trenton New Jersey. In 1848 she proposed that the federal government give financial assistance to states to build hospitals for the mentally ill and the legislation was passed. However, in 1854 the legislation was vetoed and welfare responsibility was returned to the states. Also in 1848, feminists such as Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton convened at the Seneca Falls Convention to declare a goal of equal rights and opportunity in education, employment and legal rights. This would challenge the limited opportunities that existed for an abandoned mother of three. She would have been limited in her education, employment opportunities and political standing. Towards the middle of the century, education increased and the views regarding children’s needs began to change. In an effort to provide education and shelter to needy children, Charles Loring Brace founded the Children’s Aid Society in 1853 New York. He felt that the urban environment was dangerous to children due to crime and delinquency. This organization could have given devastating consequences to an abandoned woman with three children because it was the elementary form of modern foster care. The Children’s Aid Society would remove children from families who could not provide â€Å"proper care† for their children. They would then transport these children to families in rural areas in an effort to provide opportunities in a new, â€Å"safer† environment. A woman deserted by her husband could have very easily been considered and unfit parent, as she requested financial assistance from her counterparts. During this time period, she would be in danger of having her children taken from her care and given to an unfamiliar family where she would no longer be able to contact them. The Children’s Aid Society transported over 50,000 children in a period of 25 years; these children typically became runaways. In 1864, Frederic Le Play completed the first scientific study of poverty; he investigated its causes, consequences and possible solutions. This study may have provided evidence that poverty is not the sole blame of the individual. After the time of the Civil War, 1861-65, the political climate called for a need of health services for the wounded soldiers, as well as the families of the deceased. Many slaves were freed but lacked any education, health care or employment opportunities. Due to this deficiency, the federal government began to take responsibility for the people. In 1865, the Freedman’s Bureau was established; it was the first federal welfare agency and provided health care, education, housing for the freed slaves. In1872, the Bureau ended because the Federal government did not want to facilitate welfare. Late 1800’s Towards the late nineteenth century, ideas of Social Darwinism began to influence society. It was believed those able to work would thrive and live successfully whereas those who weren’t would fail and perish; it was survival of the fittest and intervention for the poor was felt to go against nature. For this reason, financial assistance was not provided to the needy. Middle class reformers continued to assume individual flaws caused poverty. Lack of morals continued to be blamed for the conditions of the poor. However, people began to understand that certain environmental factors were responsible as well and felt that the poor needed some guidance. In 1877, Reverend Steven Gurteen established the first Charity Organization Society in Buffalo, NY, in an effort to serve as an organizing body for all private charities. This organization developed a list of the poor served in their communities so that each person would be limited to services from one charity. In this case, the woman with three children would not be able to reach out to more than one private charity, as her services were recorded. This woman would receive services from the â€Å"friendly visitor†. This was typically a middle-class female volunteer who would visit the home to investigate the living conditions and reasons for poverty. The â€Å"friendly visitor† would come to the home of the woman, inquire about the reasons for which her husband deserted her and teach her about the moral values of the middle class. The goal was to â€Å"fix† the immoral environment so that the woman would be able to uplift herself from circumstance and become able to adequately care for her home and children. She would be given advice on how to correct her problems. Additionally, they would record information about the woman and return it to their agency to better understand life in the slum. The â€Å"friendly visitors† seldom had knowledge or experience with the poor, which caused a huge, disconnect between them and their clients; often the clients suffered from decreased self-esteem. By 1890, there were 4,000 practicing â€Å"friendly visitors†. The recording practices of the visitors led to a better understanding of poverty and its causes. It became understood that the sole responsibility does not fall on the individual. By the end of the 19th century, immigration increased and overcrowding was at its peak. There was a deficit in housing and education. In response, the first settlement house, the Neighborhood Guild, was opened in New York in 1886. In 1889, Jane Adams and Ellen Gates Starr opened the most influential settlement house, known as Hull House. This would have been the first helpful opportunity presented to a mother of three who was deserted by her husband. At Hull House, she would be given a home to live in without the cost of rent. The residents at Hull House were primarily women and immigrants. â€Å"In 1891, Florence Kelley Wischnewetzky was fleeing from her husband and seeking refuge for herself and her three children, ages six, five, and four. ‘We were welcomed as though we had been invited,’ she wrote thirty-five years later in her memoirs†¦Jane Adams supplied Kelley with room, board and employment. † Hull house provided families with daycare and kindergarten services, education and training for residents, culture nights to become familiar with various cultures, a library and entertainment. Additionally, women in settlement houses worked to advocate for housing, public health care and improved working conditions for men, women and children. The Hull House residents conducted campaigns, which led to the passing of legislature, which mandated an eight-hour workday for women and children in Illinois. As knowledge of the poor grew through work in the settlement houses and friendly visitors, a growing need for a formal education was presented. In 1898 the first school for social workers was established, The New York School of Philanthropy (Columbia University). Conclusion In the 1800s, a woman with three children deserted by her husband would have faced many hardships in obtaining any financial assistance. Social welfare and charity were the responsibility of the community and the needy were distinguished based on their â€Å"worthiness†. Able-bodied unemployed people were considered unworthy and sinful. For this reason, moral teaching was the primary means of relief. However, as the 19th century progressed and urbanization led to an increase in poverty, social reformers such as Jane Addams began to take notice and advocated for the need to assist immigrants in obtaining housing, heath care, and employment. Throughout the century, the federal government assumed some responsibility for the welfare of the people, as in the Freedman’s Bureau but would abruptly re-delegate the responsibility to the states. However, the creation of the Charity Organization Society demonstrated that social welfare relief was evolving to become an increasingly centralized institution. The 1890’s settlement movement would be the first major form of assistance for a deserted mother of three, where she would be able to obtain much needed services for her and her children.

Battle of Jonesboro - Atlanta Campaign - Civil War - William Sherman Battle of Jonesboro - Conflict Dates: The Battle of Jonesboro was fought August 31-September 1, 1864, during the American Civil War (1861-1865). Armies Commanders Union Major General William T. ShermanMajor General Oliver O. HowardMajor General George H. Thomas6 corps Confederates General John Bell HoodLieutenant General William Hardee2 corps Battle of Jonesboro - Background: Advancing south from Chattanooga in May 1864, Major General William T. Sherman sought to capture the vital Confederate rail hub at Atlanta, GA. Opposed by Confederate forces, he reached the city in July after a protracted campaign in northern Georgia. Defending Atlanta, General John Bell Hood fought three battles with Sherman late in the month at Peachtree Creek,  Atlanta, and  Ezra Church, before retiring into the citys fortifications. Unwilling to launch frontal assaults against prepared defenses, Shermans forces assumed positions west, north, and east of the city and worked to cut it off from resupply. This perceived inaction, along with Lieutenant General Ulysses S. Grant being stalled at Petersburg, began to damage Union morale and led some to fear that President Abraham Lincoln could be defeated in the November election. Assessing the situation, Sherman decided to make efforts to sever the sole remaining railroad into Atlanta, the Macon Western. Departing the city, the Macon Western Railroad ran south to Eastpoint where the Atlanta West Point Railroad split off while the main line continued to and through Jonesboro (Jonesborough). Battle of Jonesboro - The Union Plan: To accomplish this goal, Sherman directed the majority of his forces to pull out of their positions and move around Atlanta to the west before falling upon the Macon Western south of the city. Only Major General Henry Slocums XX Corps was to remain north of Atlanta with orders to guard the railroad bridge over the Chattahoochee River and protect the Union lines of communication. The massive Union movement began on August 25 and saw Major General Oliver O. Howards Army of the Tennessee march with orders to strike the railroad at Jonesboro (Map). Battle of Jonesboro - Hood Responds: As Howards men moved out, Major General George H. Thomas Army of the Cumberland and Major General John Schofields Army of the Ohio were tasked with cutting the railroad farther north. On August 26, Hood was surprised to find the majority of the Union entrenchments around Atlanta empty. Two days later, Union troops reached the Atlanta West Point and began pulling up the tracks. Initially believing this to be a diversion, Hood disregarded the Union efforts until reports began to reach him of a sizable Union force south of the city. As Hood sought to clarify the situation, Howards men reached the Flint River near Jonesboro. Brushing aside a force of Confederate cavalry, they crossed the river and assumed a strong position on heights overlooking the Macon Western Railroad. Surprised by the speed of his advance, Howard halted his command to consolidate and allow his men to rest. Receiving reports of the Howards position, Hood immediately ordered Lieutenant General William Hardee to take his corps and that of Lieutenant General Stephen D. Lee south to Jonesboro to dislodge the Union troops and protect the railroad. Battle of Jonesboro - The Fighting Begins: Arriving through the night of August 31, Union interference along the railroad prevented Hardee from being ready to attack until around 3:30 PM. Opposing the Confederate commander were Major General John Logans XV Corps which faced east and Major General Thomas Ransoms XVI Corps which angled back from the Union right. Due to the delays in the Confederate advance, both Union corps had time to fortify their positions. For the assault, Hardee directed Lee to attack Logans line while Major General Patrick Cleburne led his corps against Ransom. Pressing forward, Cleburnes force advanced on Ransom but the attack began to stall when his lead division came under fire from Union cavalry led by Brigadier General Judson Kilpatrick. Regaining some momentum, Cleburne had some success and captured two Union guns before being forced to halt. To the north, Lees Corps moved forward against Logans earthworks. While some units attacked and took heavy losses before being repulsed, others, knowing the near-futility of assaulting fortifications directly, failed to fully join in the effort. Battle of Jonesboro - The Confederate Defeat: Forced to pull back, Hardees command suffered around 2,200 casualties while Union losses numbered only 172. As Hardee was being repulsed at Jonesboro, the Union XXIII, IV, and XIV Corps reached the railroad north of Jonesboro and south of Rough and Ready. As they severed the railroad and telegraph wires, Hood realized his only remaining option was to evacuate Atlanta. Planning to depart after dark on September 1, Hood ordered Lees Corps to return to the city to protect against a Union attack from the south. Left at Jonesboro, Hardee was to hold out and cover the retreat of the army. Assuming a defensive position near the town, Hardees line faced west while his right flank bent back toward to the east. On September 1, Sherman directed Major General David Stanley to take IV Corps south along the railroad, unite with Major General Jefferson C. Davis XIV Corps, and together aid Logan in crushing Hardee. Initially both were to destroy the railroad as they progressed but upon learning that Lee had departed, Sherman directed them to advance as quickly as possible. Arriving on the battlefield, Davis corps assumed as position on Logans left. Directing operations, Sherman ordered Davis to attack around 4:00 PM even through Stanleys men were still arriving. Though an initial attack was turned back, subsequent assaults by Davis men opened a breach in the Confederate lines. As Sherman did not order Howards Army of the Tennessee to attack, Hardee was able to shift troops to seal this gap and prevent IV Corps from turning his flank. Desperately holding out until nightfall, Hardee withdrew south towards Lovejoys Station. Battle of Jonesboro - Aftermath: The Battle of Jonesboro cost Confederate forces around 3,000 casualties while Union losses numbered around 1,149. As Hood had evacuated the city during the night, Slocums XX Corps was able to enter Atlanta on September 2. Pursuing Hardee south to Lovejoys, Sherman learned of the citys fall the next day. Unwilling to attack the strong position that Hardee had prepared, Union troops returned to Atlanta. Telegraphing Washington, Sherman stated, Atlanta is ours, and fairly won. The fall of Atlanta provided a massive boost to Northern morale and played a key role in ensuring the reelection of Abraham Lincoln. Beaten, Hood embarked on a campaign into Tennessee that fall which saw his army effectively destroyed at the Battles of Franklin and Nashville. Having secured Atlanta, Sherman embarked upon his March to the Sea which saw him capture Savannah on December 21. Self-efficacy is defined as your belief in your own abilities to deal with various situations. This belief is important because it pertains to how/if your goals will be met throughout your life. According to Contento (2011), â€Å"Once we are convinced that taking action has the desired consequences for us, once we care, once we are motivationally ready, we need to feel confident that we can carry out the action to obtain these benefits† (p. 51).
